ICNA Council for Social Justice applauds the conviction of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who murdered George Floyd last May. This is a historic demonstration of justice, and while we welcome the progress that has been made, we are reluctant to call this a success of the system. We urgently call upon our lawmakers to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Reform Act, a bill that is not perfect but is a definite step in the right direction.

Most importantly, we send prayers to the family of George Floyd, who have suffered a loss that is unbearable, and who have been made to grieve publicly in the past year. We are hopeful that in the years to come, history will mark this moment as the catalyst for change in the way that we conduct policing in our communities.

We request the public to contact their local representative in the House to co-sponsor the bill if they have not already done so and to help pass it.
