ICNA Council for Social Justice Emphatically Denounces the Attempted Assassination of Presidential Candidate and Former President Donald J. Trump
Statement from Imam Khalid Griggs
(Monday, July 15, 2024) The ICNA Council for Social Justice emphatically denounces the recent attempted assassination of Presidential candidate and former President Donald J. Trump. Violence against political figures as a means of expressing opposition to their views is patently unacceptable in any society, including the United States, the longest-standing democracy in the world.
“The political history of the United States sadly includes 20 attempted assassinations of sitting Presidents, resulting in the death of four Heads of State. The lethal combination of extreme political rhetoric, virtually unregulated access to weapons, and the grossly inequitable access and distribution of the nation’s resources contribute to the unfortunate toxic attitudes prevailing in our country today.” Says Executive Director- Imam Khalid Griggs.
We express concern for the health and well-being of former President Trump and his family. We call upon candidates for all political offices to stop the divisive rhetoric that contributes to the extreme polarization of the people of the United States.
