Hunger Action Alert
In the middle of a cost of living crisis, more households across the country are running short on food. And the aid meant to catch them is shrinking. Dear ICNA CSJ Community, In the midst of a cost of living crisis, and an extremely volatile climate, households across the country are increasingly threatened by food insecurity. Despite this, access to food aid is shrinking. What’s changing Two federal policy changes are shrinking access to SNAP for families who need it most. The 2025 reconciliation law expanded work requirements to include adults ages 55–64 and parents of children 14 and older, taking food aid away from families who depend on it to survive. Additionally, starting in fiscal year 2028, states will be required to pay part of SNAP’s benefit costs for the first time, a new pressure that often leads states to tighten eligibility or cut benefits rather than find new revenue. Take it to your representative Ask your representative to support rolling back the expanded work requirements and to oppose or delay the state cost-share mandate before it takes effect. Congressional offices track constituent mail closely; a wave of letters on the same issue signals to a representative that their district cares, and can shape how they vote. It’s an election year, and the perfect opportunity to remind your elected officials that they are accountable to their constituency, and that they work for your votes.
