The Islamic Circle of North America condemns the Thursday attack on Garissa University College in northeastern Kenya, in which 147 individuals were murdered and dozens wounded.

According to media reports Al-Shabab militants stormed the educational institution and opened fire on students. Those who were identified as Christian were particularly targeted.

“This unacceptable action is at odds with Islamic teachings,” said Naeem Baig, president of ICNA. “We encourage the Muslim leadership in Kenya to counter extremist ideas that lead to such abhorrent behavior.”

The loss of life afflicted by al-Shabab is deplorable, said Baig. “Our heartfelt prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased and wounded.”
