About one third of the 200 Palestinian minors detained in Israeli jails come from the occupied city of Jerusalem, some 13 years old or younger, a Palestinian rights centre revealed yesterday.

In a report, the Palestine Prisoners Centre for Studies said the occupation has increasingly targeted Jerusalem’s children in the past year, with more than 600 Jerusalemite minors arrested by the end of 2014 and more than 500 arrested from the occupied city in the first eight months of 2015.

The report also noted that the number of minors from Jerusalem currently languishing in Israeli jails has reached 60, 30 per cent of those detained from across Palestine. They include 28 minors serving prison sentences and 32 held in Israeli custody without charge according to the centre.

The report pointed out that detained minors are subjected to various types of torture in custody, which leaves a psychological impact on the children after their release.

It also stressed that the occupation deliberately targets the minors violently in an attempt to terrorise them, leave them disillusioned and mentally distorted, and threatens their future.
